THEIR IRRATIONAL OPPOSITION TO DONALD TRUMP

Evangelical leaders like John Piper and Beth Moore are warning evangelicals about voting for Donald Trump. Should they not, instead, be warning their followers about the Democrat Party's official rejection of God and America's founding values?

Psalm 33:12 says, Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD and Psalm 9:17 warns, The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God.

America’s founders believed this, and all agreed with James Madison, chief architect of the U.S. Constitution, when he wrote,

The belief in a God All Powerful, wise and good, is so essential to the moral order of the world and to the happiness of man, that arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources nor adapted with too much solicitude to the different characters and capacities impressed with it (Hyatt, 1726: The Year that Defined America, 111).

The DNC Rejects God

Sadly, the Democrat Party has rejected the God of the Bible and America’s founders. In 2019, for example, the Democrat National Committee (DNC) unanimously passed a resolution affirming atheism and declaring that neither Christianity nor any religion is necessary for morality or patriotism.

On August 24 of 2020, the DNC doubled down on their rejection of God by passing another resolution praising the values of the "religiously unaffiliated." This resolution was championed by the Secular Coalition of America, an organization that lobbies on behalf of atheists, agnostics, and humanists on public policy.

The Democrat Party’s rejection of God has drawn no criticism from party stalwarts such as Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Kamala Harris, or Joe Biden. We can only assume that they support the statement of the DNC that God and Christianity are not needed for the nation’s success.

This should come as no surprise since the Democrat Party, for some time, has supported the removal of Ten Commandment displays, crosses, and other Christian symbols from public property. When President Obama spoke at Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, he demanded that the Christian symbol behind the podium where he was to speak be removed.

The Democrat Party has officially turned its back on the America that is, “One Nation under God.” They have rejected the America whose national motto is “In God We Trust.” In its place they want to build a secularist, Marxist, socialist utopia.

Donald Trump Embraces God

To the surprise of many, Donald Trump has gone in the opposite direction as the Democrat Party. He openly acknowledges God and Christ and has no reservations about public prayers and Christian declarations.

For example, in a cabinet meeting that was broadcast live, Trump sent the mainstream media into a frenzy when he asked Ben Carson to open the meeting in prayer. Mike Pence has said that it is normal for Trump, at the beginning of a cabinet meeting, to turn to him or one of the cabinet members and ask them to open in prayer.

I know that many of you doubt the integrity of his actions in this regard. I once shared those same concerns. I am now convinced it is real. According to James Dobson, Trump was led to Christ in early 2016 by a Christian businessman. Dobson says that he prayed a prayer committing his life to Christ.

That should not be hard to believe given Trump’s open acknowledgments of God and his defense of Christian values and religious liberty. 

At a large Trump rally in Florida, First Lady Melania Trump opened by leading the massive crowd in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. In another large rally, someone passed out and those close by began praying for the person until the medics arrived. Trump put his speech on pause and affirmed the ones who were praying. Suddenly, the vast crowd burst forth singing “Amazing Grace.” It was a surreal moment!

At Easter 2020, the president gave an inspiring address to the nation from the Oval Office in which he gave glory to God and acknowledged the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He then invited a black pastor, Bishop Harry Jackson, to read the Scriptures and pray. Jackson prayed a powerful prayer for America from the Oval Office and ended it “in the name of Jesus Christ.”

I cannot imagine any of the above happening at a Joe Biden rally, or any Democrat rally.

Their Irrational Rejection of Trump

Those few evangelicals who oppose Trump seem to be denying the very grace of God that they preach. Yes, Trump is a flawed human being. Yes, he often comes across as arrogant and braggadocious. Is God’s grace not sufficient for Trump and his human deficiencies?

Trump’s compassion is seen more in his actions and policies than his words. Just last night I listened to a young black man, who had just been released from prison, giving sincere thanks to the president for his prison reform policies that had allowed him to go free. There are a multitude of such examples in his presidency.

The idea that a “Christian” should sit this one out or vote for Joe Biden because they do not like the president’s personality and tweets, is shallow, irrational, and denies the sovereign grace of God at work in Donald Trump and America.

WHY THIS ELECTION SHOULD BE AN EASY CHOICE FOR EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS

My purpose in life--my reason for being--is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and see His church strengthened and built up in America and around the world. I have no vested interest in any candidate or political party but will vote for the one whose policies are most friendly to the cause of Christ and my own reason for being.

The Democrat Party--the party of my parents and grandparents--has made this an easy choice. To cite just one example; last year, the Democrat National Committee (DNC) unanimously passed a resolution affirming atheism and declaring that neither Christianity nor any religion is necessary for morality or patriotism.

By this act, they rejected God, the Bible, and any transcendent guide for truth and morality. They swallowed the lie of the serpent to our first parents that if they would ignore God's command and go their own way, "You will be like God, knowing [determining] good and evil" (Gen. 3:5). 

This move was not only slap in the face of God, but also a rejection of America’s founding generation. To cite just one example; in his First Inaugural Address, George Washington declared,

The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the external rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained (Hyatt, Pilgrims and Patriots, 174).

Donald Trump, despite his tweets and personal flaws, has supported individual and religious liberty. He has acknowledged God and Christ and promoted policies that are friendly to the Christian cause. He has obviously moved in the direction of Christian, conservative values

YOU CANNOT BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF GOD AND THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ABORTION ISSUE

Just a short distance from where I live, a young woman gave birth to a baby in the bathroom of an Applebee’s restaurant. She then threw it in the garbage and left. According to a published report, the newborn’s lifeless body was found by employees who were cleaning the bathroom about 30 minutes after the mother left the restaurant.

How could someone be so calloused and inhumane about a new-born life? I do not know her situation, but perhaps she had heard of the Democrats in the New York state legislature breaking into cheers after passing a bill that allowed a woman to abort her baby right up to the time of birth.

Perhaps she had also heard of Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia promoting his pro-abortion bill and saying that if a baby happens to survive an abortion, the infant will be made comfortable while the mother and her doctor decide if the newborn baby should live or die.

Not a single Democrat party leader has spoken out against these “death bills” that affirm infanticide (the killing of infants) and inculcate in the younger generation a callousness toward life. And make no mistake! It is their rejection of Christian truth that has opened the way for the Democrat party to adopt such radical positions on abortion. 

The Democrat Party can embrace infanticide because it has rejected God and any transcendent moral authority. In 2019, for example, the Democrat National Committee (DNC) unanimously passed a resolution affirming atheism and declaring that neither Christianity nor any religion is necessary for morality and patriotism.

Untethered from any transcendent moral guide, they are free to make up their own. In their postmodern worldview, truth is whatever they decide it to be. They have swallowed the lie of the serpent to our first parents, You shall be as gods knowing [determining] good and evil (Genesis 3:5).

On the other hand, those who hold a Christian worldview know that the baby in the womb is a life from God—a real person. Erica, who was about to have an abortion, came to this realization in a very stunning way. Having second thoughts about her abortion, she begged the nurse to let her see her baby. She wrote,

As soon as I saw my child on the ultrasound, I knew I couldn't do it. I saw the heart beating, and he moved his little hands (almost like a wave). I think God intervened and sent me a message that I was about to make the biggest mistake of my life.

Erica’s intuitive, common sense response is confirmed by both the Bible and science. For example, Luke, the physician, and author of the Third Gospel, records the very personal response of John the Baptist, while still in the womb, to the voice of Mary, the mother of Jesus, greeting his mother. He must have kicked for his mother, Elizabeth, said to Mary, For indeed as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy (Luke 1:44).

According to recent scientific research, babies can experience pain after 20 weeks in the womb, and that capability for pain increases with each passing day. That is why babies in the womb will seek to avoid the abortionist's tools and will emit a “silent scream” as their tiny bodies are ripped apart.

It should not be surprising that such a detestable practice in the modern world has roots in racism. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, was a racist and an advocate of "eugenics," a practice of selective breeding to produce a superior race. She saw abortion as the means to "weed out" those "inferior" elements of human society. 

I heard a black pastor say that Planned Parenthood kills more black people every two weeks than the KKK did in all the years of its existence. Only Heaven knows how many Condoleeza Rices, Clarence Thomases, Ben Carsons, Aretha Franklins, Barak Obamas, and Thomas Sowells have had their lives snuffed out by the abortionist!

What a horrible thing is the abortion industry! When I think of the 60 million babies whose lives have been ended in the womb, most often with great suffering, I cannot help but think that Almighty God is grieved and angered by this atrocity.

Those who claim to be prolife evangelicals for Biden remind me of those in 1860 who claimed to be Christians but supported slavery. The famed revivalist, Charles G. Finney (1792-1875), saw through their facade and declared, “It is impossible to be on the right side of God and the wrong side of the slavery issue.”

I am convinced that the same is true of the abortion issue today.

THE DEMOCRAT PARTY DIVORCES GOD AND THE AMERICA OF 1776

The Democrat Party’s divorce from God has become final. In 2019, the Democrat National Committee (DNC) unanimously passed a resolution affirming atheism and declaring that neither Christianity nor any religion is necessary for morality or patriotism. In other words, “We don’t need God!”

On August 24 of this year, the DNC doubled down on their rejection of God by passing another resolution praising the values of the "religiously unaffiliated." That this resolution was affirming atheism is confirmed by the fact that it was championed by the Secular Coalition of America, an organization that lobbies on behalf of atheists, agnostics, and humanists on public policy.

The Democrat Party's divorce of God should come as no surprise. At the 2012 Democrat National Convention, a majority of the delegates wanted to remove a reference to God from the party platform. When the leaders decided to leave it, the audience loudly booed. They did not want even a superficial reference to God.

Individual politicians may continue to refer to their faith or their prayers, but the actions and official policy statements of their party tell the real story.

In rejecting God, the Democrat Party has rejected the America of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Lincoln, and King. They have rejected the America of “In God We Trust.” They have rejected the America that is “one nation under God.” They have rejected the America of 1776.

God and America Were Married in the Minds of the Founders

For the first 150 years of America’s existence, no one questioned the axiom America is a Christian nation. This did not mean that everyone was a Christian or that the nation officially sanctioned any denomination or religious sect. 

It meant, instead, that the majorty of citzens professed to be Christians and that the nation’s laws and institutions were founded on Christian principles and values.

This fact was stated by the U. S. Supreme Court in 1892 in the case of Church of the Holy Trinity vs The United States. After examining thousands of historical documents, the nation’s highest Court declared,

There is no dissonance in these declarations. There is a universal language pervading them all, having one meaning. They affirm and reaffirm that this is a religious nation . . .. From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation. These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation (Hyatt, 1726: The Year that Defined America, 6-7).

In rejecting God, the modern Democrat Party has rejected the America of her founders. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Franklin all agreed with James Madison, the nation’s 4th president and chief architect of the U.S. Constitution, who said,

The belief in a God All Powerful, wise and good, is so essential to the moral order of the world and to the happiness of man, that arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources nor adapted with too much solicitude to the different characters and capacities impressed with it (Hyatt, 1726: The Year that Defined America, 111).

It was their faith in God that gave them hope that America could get through her challenges and rise above her sins. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood this and in his “I Have a Dream Speech” he praised America’s founding documents and declared that he dreamed of a day when Americans of every race would sing together the words of that patriotic hymn,

My country 'tis of Thee, sweet land of liberty, of Thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

Ben Franklin Would Vehemently Reject the DNC

The Democrat Party’s rejection of God has drawn no criticism from party stalwarts such as Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, or Joe Biden. They apparently have accepted the statement of the DNC that God and Christianity are unneccesary for the nation’s success.

Contrast their attitude to that of Benjamin Franklin, considered one of America’s most nonreligious founders. When Thomas Paine sent him a manuscript in which he challenged the idea of a prayer-answering God and other aspects of orthodox Christian doctrine, Franklin reacted swiftly and vehemently.

Franklin refused to print the book, and in strong language urged Paine not even to allow anyone else see it. He wrote,

I would advise you, therefore . . . to burn this piece before it is seen by any other person; whereby you will save yourself a great deal of mortification by the enemies it may raise against you, and perhaps a good deal of regret and repentance. If men are so wicked with religion [Christianity], what would they be if without it (Hyatt, 1726: The Year that Defined America, 138).

Franklin may have questioned certain aspects of Christian doctrine during his life, but he was convinced that only Christianity provided the moral teachings for a stable and successful society. He dreaded the thought of what would happen if that influence were removed.

Christian Morality is Absolutely Necessary

Although they did not want an official, state church, America’s founders agreed that only Christianity provided the moral influence that would lead to a stable and prosperous society. Modern research has confirmed their view.

Some years ago, I listened as Charlie Rose (hardly a conservative) interviewed a social scientist who had just led and completed a study of the power of symbols, including religious symbols. One thing he said grabbed my attention.

He said they discovered that a person sitting in a room with a Bible in view, is less likely to tell a lie than if the Bible is not there. They discovered that the very presence of the Bible exudes a positive moral influence. This would also be true of crosses, Bible verses, and Ten Commandment displays.

Sadly, the Democrat Party has supported the removal of Ten Commandment displays, crosses, and other Christian symbols from public property. When President Obama spoke at Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, he demanded that the Christian symbol behind the podium where he was to speak be removed.

Are we not seeing the consequences of these actions? With Bible reading, prayer, and Christian symbols having been banned from schools and public property, their positive influence is no longer felt, and evil runs wild. We need God back in the public life of our nation!

The Consequences of Democrats Gaining Power

If Democrats gain power in November, they will continue to seek the removal of every vestige of God from the public life of this nation. Christians will be persecuted, and the America of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and King will be a thing of the past.

This is why Christians of every denomination and theological persuasion must pray for God’s intervention in our land. Pray that He will visit America once again with another Great Awakening. Then, on November 3 (or before), cast your vote for the party that will welcome God back into the public life of this nation.
